Bus & Rail – Providing the Solution.

The 600-plus member companies of the Association of German Transport Companies (Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen – VDV) play a key role in solving social challenges:

–  Climate change and environmental protection,
–  Shortage of resources,
–  Structural and demographic change,
–  Rising traffic volumes,
–  Tight public-sector budgets.

This is because Bus & Rail

–  Produce low specific CO2 emissions,
–  Are energy-efficient and already use renewable energies,
–  Provide mobility for everyone and ensure supply of goods,
–  Are powerful and efficient in terms of space utilisation,
–  Deliver significant benefits for the whole economy.

The public transport and rail freight sector is important: every day, over 28 million passengers use public transport services in Germany. That means more than ten billion passengers choose Bus & Rail for their travel needs every year. This cuts car journeys by over 18 million a day.

The rail freight operators organised in the VDV carry approximately 650 million tonnes a year. If these goods were transported by road, the network would have to cope with an extra 77,000 fully laden trucks every working day.

In Germany around 830,000 jobs directly and indirectly depend on public transport and rail freight transport operators, their infrastructure and the vehicle industry.

Bus & Rail strengthen Germany as a business location: The gross value-added generated by public transport and rail freight totals more than € 40 billion a year. The level of demand of public transport companies is such that 90 percent of this is channelled back into German companies; therefore, for every euro spent on running public transport and rail freight, three to four euros are generated. With the tax revenue raised from the companies and their employees, with attractive jobs and increased regional economic strength, public transport and rail freight also make a major contribution to public funds.

Through the services they provide, the VDV member companies ensure future-oriented mobility in which all means of transport can make full use of their strengths for the good of all. In future, intelligent integration of all means of transport will be the only possible way to ensure environmentally sound mobility and supply of goods for all people. However, this can only be achieved by working together: competent authorities, operators and manufacturers, federal, regional and local authorities must create an environment that supports the companies’ efforts to provide attractive services. For the good of passengers and the economy – for Germany.

Continued sustainable mobility for Germany and prompt, reliable delivery of goods: VDV member companies are working with the utmost efficiency, in a socially responsible manner and to the highest environmental standards in order to achieve this. Every day. And in constantly new ways.
