Who we are

Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen

The “Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen” (Association of German Transport Companies – VDV) is the organisation for Germany’s public transport companies and rail freight transport companies. In 2003 the VDV was restructured into five divisions:
  • Passenger transport with buses (abbreviation = BUS
  • Passenger transport with tramways, light rail transit systems, metros or comparable transport systems (TRAM)
  • Passenger transport with railways (PTR)
  • Rail freight transport (RFT)
  • Association and principal organisations (A/P)

The railway infrastructure companies do not have their own division yet. The VDV has now got 548 ordinary members and 55 extraordinary members. 430 members are active within public transport and/or short-distance passenger transport and 139 within freight transport.

In 2008 the VDV transport companies active within road passenger transport (divisions BUS and TRAM) transported 7.6 billion passengers and earned 6.5 billion euros. The railway companies of the PTR division – short-distance passenger transport of the DB Group as well as the non-federal railways organised in the VDV – transported 2 billion passengers and earned 3.2 billion euros. All in all the public transport represented by the VDV was used for 9.6 billion trips in one year or 26 million trips daily. This corresponds to a share of more than 90% of the entire public transport market in Germany.

The VDV freight transport companies transported more than 650 million tonnes of freight in one year (public operation and non-public operation). In 2008 the transport services within public rail freight transport grew to approx. 116 billion tonnes kilometres.

The association e.g. advises its member companies, ensures the exchange of information between members and prepares standardised principles on technical, operational, legal and economic matters to reach the best possible organisation of the operation. Moreover, the VDV represents the interests of its members towards the parliaments, authorities, industry and other institutions. The regional concerns of the member companies are attended to by nine regional groups.

Five general committees, 16 expert committees and numerous further committees with about 500 experts work on solving special problems of the sector and its members. In this connection the committees prepare regulations (VDV Recommendations) and numerous other publications, which are also presented in the Internet (www.vdv.de) under “publications”.
