ACTIVE SECTOR ASSOCIATION - IN DIALOGUE WITH POLITICS AND ECONOMY

About 600 companies performing public passenger transport and rail freight transport in Germany are organised in the “Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen” (VDV = Association of German Transport Companies). The VDV advises and supports its member companies and politicians, supports the exchange of experience and know-how between the members and prepares technical, operational, legal and economic principles.

The VDV also represents the interests of its member companies towards parliaments, authorities, industry and other institutions. Therefore, the VDV has offices in Brussels (European office) and Berlin (capital office) besides its head office in Cologne.

The regional interests of the member companies are defended by nine regional groups. Moreover, sixgeneral committees and 19 expert committees are dealing with the special challenges of the sector. More than 400 experts in very different fields do voluntary work in these committees, which results in rules (VDV Recommendations and VDV Reports).

The VDV has existed in its present form since the beginning of 1991 as the Association of Public Transport Companies (VÖV), the Federal Association of German Railways, Motorized Traffic and Funicular Railways (BDE) and the VÖV of the former German Democratic Republic merged to the VDV. The history of the VDV began with the foundation of the Association of Prussian Railways in 1846 and the foundation of the Association of German Tramway and Light Railway Administrations in 1895.

Soll-Daten-Schnittstellen: europäische Norm NeTEx (CEN)

NeTEx ist der künftige europäische Standard für die Übertragung von Soll-Daten bezüglich Netz und Fahrplan. Der Standard wurde unter maßgeblicher Beteiligung der in Deutschland aktiven Systemanbieter erstellt. NeTEx ermöglicht die Übertragung aller Informationen, die bereits erfolgreich seit vielen Jahren über die VDV-Schnittstelle 452 übertragen werden. Der Umfang von NeTEx geht aber erheblich darüber hinaus und berücksichtigt so auch die zwischenzeitlich hinzugekommenen Anforderung.

Die VDV-Schrift 452 ist in diesem Sinne kompatibel mit der europäischen Norm NeTEx.
Zur Erleichterung wurde eine Gegenüberstellung und ein Beispiel erstellt.

Network and Timetable Exchange

NeTEx is a CEN/ Technical Standard published in 2014.
The goal of NeTEX is to provide a efficient European wide standard for exchanging Public Transport schedules and related data.

NeTEx – Video: NeTEx is the answer

NeTEX is intended to be a general purpose format capable of exchanging timetables for Rail, Bus, Coach, Ferry, Air or any other mode of public transport. It includes full support for rail services and can be used to exchange UIC (International Union Of Railways) data .

NeTEx is based on the CEN Transmodel standard which specifies a Conceptual model for Public Transport data, extended with additional concepts for stops and stations from the CEN Technical standard IFOPT (Identification of Fixed Objects in Public Transport).

NeTEX uses a fully articulated model that represents PT concepts as well characterised, layered abstractions; the format is designed for the efficient, updateable exchange of complex transport data between distributed systems. This allows the data to be used in modern web services architectures and to support a wide range of passenger information and operational applications.

The NeTEX schema is free to use and its development is managed by the CEN standards process.

NeTEx consists of three parts:

Part 1 is the description of the public transport network topology exchange
Part 2 is the description of the scheduled timetables exchange
Part 3 is the description of the fare information Exchange

The use of NeTEx has been described in a "NeTEx VDV Application Handbook" which has been published as VDV recommendation 462.

It is applied for example in Alto Adige (Bolzano, STA)
